Purring Cat — a paper automaton with a voice

Purring Cat, presented by Rob Ives on 16 August 2026, brings sound into paper automata. Its purr comes from a wheel whose teeth occupy slightly less than two thirds of its circumference. The smooth portion interrupts the sound, producing a repeated purr with pauses.

The downloadable PDF includes parts to print on both sides of thin card and illustrated assembly instructions. It is offered through Ives’s website and to paid newsletter subscribers. The cat can also be built as a separate, static desk model.

For a maker, the interesting feature is the relationship between geometry and rhythm. The toothed and smooth sections determine when the sound occurs; the mechanism gives the animal a recognisable behaviour without electronics. This is an August release included among our recent discoveries.
