Kamiphony, opening at Koffler Arts in Toronto on 24 September 2026, brings together a roomful of kinetic paper machines by Canadian artist Cybèle Young. Each object performs a small, repetitive action; together, under carefully designed lighting and sound, they form something between an automata cabinet, a mechanical orchestra and an inhabited paper landscape.

Young has worked with Japanese paper for decades, often building miniature objects whose apparent delicacy conceals intricate construction. In Kamiphony the scale expands, but the attraction remains in the relationship between material and movement. Paper folds, flexes and casts shadows while simple mechanical actions give the objects an unexpected sense of agency.

The machines are deliberately not useful. Their repetitive gestures do not optimise a task or imitate industrial efficiency; they perform. This brings them close to the tradition of automata, where the mechanism matters precisely because it produces character, timing and surprise rather than productivity.

For PaperPino, Kamiphony is especially interesting because it sits on the border between paper sculpture and paper automata. The paper is not a decorative skin added to a mechanism: it is part of the behaviour of the work. Thickness, stiffness, translucency and the way a sheet responds to motion all become elements of the animation.

The exhibition, curated by Zoë Foster, runs at Koffler Gallery from 24 September to 13 December 2026 and is presented as the international debut of the project.
