Geared Goose — a pecking cardboard automaton
Geared Goose © Rob Ives.

Rob Ives introduced Geared Goose on 31 August 2026. Rock its body forward and the head pecks: a small geared mechanism connects the two movements. It joins September’s selection as a recent release from the end of August.

The parts are printed on ordinary paper, glued to corrugated card and cut out; split pins serve as pivots. Ives specifies fine, 1.5 mm e-flute card. The downloadable PDF supplies templates and illustrated instructions, and is available separately or through his paid newsletter.

The exposed construction is part of its appeal. You can follow the action from your hand to the bird’s beak, making the model useful both as a playful object and as a way to examine mechanical movement.
