Giovanni Maria Cassini (1745-1824) was regarded as one of the last great Italian globemakers of the 18th century. Here, I present two 15 cm diameter globes in a Christmas ornament version. The larger version of the terrestrial globe was already proposed in my previous post. The celestial globe is a new entry. The hi-res. digital reproduction of the twelve gores and the two polar calottes are available at the wonderful David Rumsey Map Collection website, that is really worth of visiting. 
The celestial globe gores were published in 1792 in Rome. They were based upon the astronomical observation of Flamsteed and Lacaille, and depict all known constellations with stars varying in size according to their magnitude.
Anothe great web site where you can get a lot of information about this and many other celestial globes and maps is Atlas Coelestis by F. Stoppa. Unfortunately, the site is in Italian only, but the number of wonderful picture is so large that I suggest to visit it.

Il globo celeste di Cassini da 30 cm di diametro è praticamente pronto. Devo ultimare il supporto (diverso da quello terrestre) e fare le istruzioni (che solitamente sono una parte del progetto che impiega tanto tempo, ahimè…). Però è mia intenzione ultimarlo quanto prima.
